Introduction
Background of John’s Gospel
- Ninety percent of John is not found in the other 3 synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke)
- John, the disciple who was closest to Jesus
- Was the unnamed disciple whom Jesus loved
- Was one of the “inner three”
- Was at the mount of transfiguration
- Lean on the chest of Jesus at the last supper
- Took care of Jesus’ mother (both John & Mary’s tombs are in Ephesus)
- John most likely younger than Jesus and outlives all the other apostles.
- John died a natural death as an old man around AD 95
- John saw the destruction of Jerusalem and the Jews scattered around the world
- John saw many of the heresies develop in the early church, mainly Gnosticism.
- NT could be reduplicated without manuscripts by Patristic quotations of the early Church fathers
- We have writings of men who studied under John, such as Polycarp
- John thought of as the theologian of the Church, not Paul
- John’s style although simple Greek, contains difficult theology using contrast and repetitive language. John’s style is very Jewish.
- John speaks of Jesus more and uses the words belief, faith, and believe more than other Gospels
- John is the one who really brings out the DIETY OF JESUS CHRIST

Chapter 1
Main Focus – God Came To Earth In Human Flesh
- Introduction
- God is light
- God in the flesh
- Testimony of John the Baptist
- John states 3 times that Jesus came before him (John) although John was older
- John testifies that he is not the Christ
- John testifies that he saw the Spirit descending on Jesus at His baptism
- John testifies that Jesus is the Lamb of God
- John points out Jesus to two of his disciples
- Two disciples follow Jesus (Andrew and John) (day 1)
- Andrew brings Peter to Jesus (Jesus calls Peter a stone – formally Cephas)
- Jesus finds Philip (the following day – day 2 )
- Philip finds Nathanael
- Jesus speaks of Nathanael (an Israelite in whom there is no guile) saw him under fig tree
Chapter 2
Main Focus – Jesus First Miracle
- Wedding in Cana – 1st miracle, water into wine (day 3)
- Jesus and disciples (along with some women) go to Capernaum for a few days
- Jesus and disciples go up to Jerusalem because the time of the Passover is at hand
- The cleansing of the temple - Jesus chases moneychangers from temple
- Jews ask for a sign – Jesus says, destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up
- The disciples remembered this saying after Jesus had been raised from the dead
Chapter 3
Main Focus – You Must Be Born Again
- Nicodemus comes to Jesus by night
- You must be born again – Jesus must be lifted up – God so loved the world
- Jesus and His disciples came to the land of Judea and are baptizing
- John’s disciples and the Jews are in dispute about purification
- John the Baptist’s discourse
- A man can receive nothing unless it is given to him from above
- John confirms his place – I am not the Christ
- John is the friend of the bridegroom and rejoices
- He must increase – I (John) must decrease
- No one receives the testimony of Jesus
- He who receives certifies that God is true
- He who loves the Son has life…
Chapter 4
Main Focus – Woman At The Well
- Jesus leaves Judea for Galilee, going through Samaria
- Jesus encounters the woman at the well in Sychar
- Jesus asks for a drink of water
- Woman baffled why a Jew would ask a Samaritan for anything
- Jesus talks about the living water
- Jesus confronts her sin by telling her to go and get her husband
- Woman knows He is a prophet – asks religious questions
- Jesus reveals to her that He is the messiah
- Disciples return and are bewildered - tell Jesus to eat something
- Woman at the well’s testimony causes many in Samaria to believe
- Many more believe because of Jesus’ own Words
- Jesus stays in Samaria for a few days
- Jesus heads to Galilee
- Jesus heals the centurion’s son
Chapter 5
Main Focus – Jesus Heals Paralyzed Man On The Sabbath
- Jesus heals paralyzed man at the pool of Bethsaida
- Do you want to be made well?
- Rise, take up your bed and walk
- See you have been made well, sin no more lest a worst thing happen to you
- Pharisees strongly object because miracle was done on the Sabbath
- Jews sought to kill Jesus because He broke the Sabbath and made Himself equal with God
- Jesus has Conflict With Pharisees – Jesus declares:
- The Father loves the Son
- The Father raises the dead
- All judgment has been committed to the Son
- The dead will hear the voice of the Son – resurrection of life & condemnation
- I only say and do what the Father does
- You do not believe – because you do not have His Word
- You do not believe the Scriptures
- You do not believe Moses
Chapter 6
Main Focus – Jesus, I AM The Bread Of Life
- Feeding of the five thousand
- Multitudes seek to take Jesus and make Him king – Jesus departs to mountain to pray
- Disciples leave in boat – Jesus walks on water
- Crowds seek Jesus - Jesus rebuke’s crowds motive for following Him
- Jesus – I am the bread of life
- Jesus’ long discourse on eating His flesh and drinking His blood
- No one can come to Jesus except whom it has been granted by the Father
- Many go back from following Him
- Peter’s declaration: Lord to whom shall we go, you have the Words of eternal life.
Chapter 7
Main Focus – Jesus Stirs Controversy In Jerusalem At Feast
- Jesus comes to Galilee – Feast of Tabernacles was at hand
- His brothers tempt Jesus to show himself to the world
- His brothers did not believe in Him
- Jesus says the world cannot hate them but they hate Him – testifies that works are evil
- Jesus goes up to the feast – Jews are looking for Him
- Jews try to take Jesus unsuccessfully
- Jesus teaches in the temple
- He who speaks of himself seeks his own glory…
- Jesus clashes with the Pharisees
- Second attempt to take Jesus – unsuccessful because His hour had not yet come
- Crowd is divided over Jesus – no prophet comes from Galilee
Chapter 8
Main Focus – Jesus, I AM
- Pharisees bring woman caught in adultery – go and sin no more
- Jesus – I am the light of the world
- Jesus debates the Jews about His origin and relationship to the Father
- Jesus accuses Jews – their father is the devil
- Jesus states: before Abraham was I AM
- Jews take up stones to stone Him
Chapter 9
Main Focus – Jesus Heals Man Who Was Born Blind
- Jesus sees a man born blind – not from sin, but for the glory of God
- Jesus Heals the man born blind on a Sabbath
- Jesus makes mud and anoints his eyes
- Jesus tells him to go and wash in pool of Siloam
- Blind man obeys and comes back seeing
- Many who knew him marvel at the miracle
- Blind man who was healed is brought before Pharisees
- Blind man’s parents are brought before Pharisees
- Blind man gives testimony of Jesus and is expelled from the synagogue
- Jesus finds the blind man and he believes in Jesus and worships Him
Chapter 10
Main Focus – I AM The Good Sheppard
- Jesus teaches by illustration of sheep
- Jesus – I AM the gate (or door)
- Jesus – I AM the good Sheppard
- Jesus – my sheep hear my voice
- Jesus confronts Pharisees about dying in their sin
- Jesus tells Jews that they are not His sheep
- Crowds are divided about who Jesus is
- Jesus claims to be God
- Jews again take up stones to stone Him
- Jews try to seize Him – Jesus goes to Judea in the desert, many come to Him there
Chapter 11
Main Focus – The Death & Resurrection Of Lazarus
- Lazarus the brother of Mary & Martha is sick
- Jesus hears of it and waits two more days to go to Bethany
- Jesus tells His disciples that Lazarus is dead – they all head for Bethany
- Martha comes out to meet Jesus – Lord if you had been here my brother would not have died
- Jesus – I am the Resurrection and the Life
- Mary comes out to meet Jesus – Lord if you had been here my brother would not have died
- Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead
- Jews plot against Jesus
- Caiaphas prophecies about Jesus dying for the people
Chapter 12
Main Focus – Passion Week Begins
- Supper where Mary pours perfume on Jesus – This was in Bethany at Simon the leper’s house (see synoptic Gospels)
- Judas complains that money could be given to poor – Jesus commends Mary
- Jews want to kill Jesus and Lazarus because many believed in the raising of the dead
- Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey
- Greeks ask to see Jesus
- Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground…
- Voice from heaven – I have glorified it and will glorify it again (talking about the Father’s name)
- Jesus preaches to the crowds
- Jesus predicts His death – If I am lifted up I will draw all people to Me
- Walk in the light while you still have the light…
- They did not believe – Prophet Isaiah; Lord who has believed our report?
- Many rulers believed but were afraid – they loved the praise of men…
- Jesus did not come to judge but to save – speaks only what the father tells Him

Chapter 13
Main Focus – The Last Supper
- Jesus washes the disciples feet
- Jesus teaches on servitude
- Judas the betrayer
- Jesus predicts Judas’ betrayal
- Judas leaves to betray Jesus
- The Son of Man is glorified and is going away
- Jesus commands, “Love one another”
- Jesus predicts Peter’s denial
Chapter 14
Main Focus – Jesus Answers Three Of The Disciples
- Thomas – how do we know the way
- Jesus – I AM the way, the truth, and the life
- Philip – show us the Father
- Jesus teaches on how He and the Father are one
- You will do greater works
- I will not leave you orphans - Jesus introduces the coming Holy Spirit
- Judas (not Iscariot) – will you show yourself to the world or just us?
- Jesus says, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my Word…
Chapter 15
Main Focus – Abide In Me And I In You
- Jesus – I AM the vine and my Father the vinedresser
- Jesus teaches about abiding in Him and remaining in Him – bearing fruit
- Jesus commands – love one another
- You are my friends if you do whatever I command you
- No longer do I call you servants…but friends…
- You did not choose Me but I chose you
- The world will hate you – They hated Me without cause
- I will send the Helper, the Spirit of Truth
Chapter 16
Main Focus – The Promise Of The Holy Spirit
- Jesus warns disciples of trouble to come
- Jesus tells disciples that He is going away
- Jesus talks about the promised coming of the Holy Spirit and His role
- The Father loves you because you love Me
- Ask in My name and it will be done
- Jesus talks of His going away – back to the Father
- Jesus explains more about the Father
Chapter 17
Main Focus – The Prayer Of Jesus
- Jesus’ Prayer
- Father, Glorify your Son
- Eternal life is to know the Father and the Son
- I have finished the work
- I have made known your word to the ones you have given Me
- I pray for them, not for the world
- I have lost none – except the son of perdition
- They are not of the world – keep them from the evil one
- Sanctify them by your truth – the Word is truth
- I pray for those who believe through their word – (believers of all time)
- May they be as one and we are one

Chapter 18
Main Focus – The Betrayal And Arrest Of Jesus
- Jesus and disciples cross the brook Kidron and go to the garden
- Judas comes with detachment of troops with torches
- Jesus steps forward and says who are you seeking?
- Jesus’ I AM statement sends them falling to the ground
- Jesus says to mob, let these others go their way
- Peter cuts off Malchus’s right ear
- Jesus tells Peter to put sword away – Shall I not drink the cup?
- Jesus led away to Annas first and interrogated
- John and Peter enter courtyard of the high priest
- Jesus was asked about His doctrine – then struck on the cheek
- Annas sends Jesus bound to Caiaphas the high priest
- Peter denies Jesus three times before rooster crows
- Jesus left all night in the Praetorium
- Jesus brought before Pilate – what is truth?
- Pilate releases Barabbas to crowd
Chapter 19
Main Focus – The Crucifixion Of Jesus Christ
- Order of events
- Pilate has Jesus scourged
- Crown of thorns and purple robe put on Jesus
- Jesus brought out before the crowds
- Pilate wants to release Him but they yell crucify Him
- The Jews say Jesus broke the law by saying the He was the Son of God
- Pilate afraid asks Jesus where He is from – no answer – no power over Me
- Jews blackmail Pilate by saying he is no friend of the Caesar
- Pilate turns Jesus over to be crucified therefore Jesus was condemned
- Jesus carries His cross
- Soldiers divide His garments and cast lots for His tunic (fulfilling Scripture)
- Jesus says from the cross:
- Mother behold your son; son (John) behold your mother
- I thirst!
- It is finished!
- Jesus’ gives up His Spirit and dies
- Jesus bones where not broken but a spear was thrust into His side (fulfilling Scripture)
- Joseph and Nicodemus take the body of Jesus along with spices
- Jesus’ burial in a rich man’s tomb – Joseph’s of Arimathea (fulfilling Scripture)
Chapter 20
Main Focus – The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ
- Mary, Peter and John visit the tomb
- Two angels appear to Mary as she looks into the tomb
- Mary weeps and sees Jesus supposing that He is the gardener and asks where is the Lord
- Jesus appears to Mary
- Jesus says, Mary
- Mary recognizes Jesus and says, rabboni
- Jesus says do not cling to me, I must ascend to my Father – go tell the disciples
- Jesus appears to the disciples
- Jesus appears to Thomas – my Lord and my God
- These things where written so you may believe…
Chapter 21
Main Focus – Jesus Spends Time With His Disciples
- Disciples go fishing
- Lord appears on the shore – great catch of fish (second catch of fish miracle)
- The Lord and disciples eat breakfast
- Lord restores Peter by asking three times if Peter loves Him
- The Lord predicts what death Peter will die to glorify God
- Peter worried about what will happen to John – Jesus says to Peter, you follow Me
- If all the things Jesus did were written down the world could not contain the books
